Why Visit Malta? A Travel Designer's Perspective on One of the Mediterranean's Best-Kept Secrets

When people tell me they're thinking about a trip to the Mediterranean, the conversation usually starts the same way.

Italy is almost always on the list.

Greece usually is too.

And honestly, I understand why. They're both incredible destinations, and I'd never try to talk someone out of visiting either one.

But every now and then, I'll ask a different question.

"Have you ever thought about Malta?"

There's usually a pause.

Not because they've decided against it.

More often than not, it simply wasn't on their radar.

And that's when the conversation gets interesting.

One of my favorite parts of what I do is introducing people to destinations they may not have considered not because they're trendy or undiscovered, but because they're simply a better fit for the kind of trip they're hoping to have.

Malta is one of those places.

So, Why Visit Malta?

The simplest answer?

Because it gives you so much without asking you to rush.

It's one of those destinations where history, culture, beautiful coastlines, and incredible food all come together naturally. You don't feel like you're spending your days racing from one attraction to the next just so you can say you've seen everything.

Instead, Malta encourages you to slow down a little.

And in my experience, those are usually the trips I remember the most.

What Makes Malta Different?

One thing I always tell clients is not to compare Malta to Italy or Greece.

Malta has its own personality.

It's smaller, easier to explore, and while it has plenty of famous landmarks, I don't think that's what makes people fall in love with it.

It's the feeling you get walking through Valletta, Malta's beautiful capital city, early in the morning before the streets begin to fill.

It's sitting down by the harbor for lunch and realizing two hours have gone by without looking at your watch.

It's wandering through Mdina, the island's historic walled city, with no real destination in mind because every street seems to lead to another beautiful view.

Those moments aren't planned.

They just seem to happen here

.

.

You Don't Have to Be a History Buff

People sometimes assume Malta is only for travelers who love history.

I don't think that's true.

Do you notice the architecture when you travel?

Do you enjoy walking through neighborhoods instead of shopping malls?

Do you appreciate visiting places that still feel authentic rather than built for tourists?

Then I think you'll enjoy Malta.

History isn't something you have to study here.

It's simply part of everyday life.

You'll notice it in the honey-colored limestone buildings, the centuries-old churches, the fortified city walls, and the fishing villages that still feel connected to their traditions.

Even if you've never heard of the Knights of St. John, you'll quickly notice their influence. This religious and military order arrived in Malta in the 1500s and transformed the island, building fortified cities like Valletta, impressive churches, and many of the landmarks that still define Malta today. You don't need to know the history before you arrive but once you're there, it's hard not to become curious about it.

Where I Always Tell People to Spend Their Time

If this is your first visit, there are a few places I almost always include in an itinerary.

Valletta

Don't treat Valletta like a city you're trying to check off a list.

Spend time there.

Find a café.

Walk down streets simply because they look interesting.

Pop into a church.

Sit along the waterfront.

Some of my favorite memories in Valletta weren't planned at all.

Mdina

People call Mdina the Silent City, and after a few minutes you'll understand why. Once the island's capital, its narrow streets are remarkably peaceful, with very little traffic and an atmosphere that invites you to slow down.

Don't worry about seeing everything.

Just wander.

Gozo

Gozo is Malta's smaller sister island, just a short ferry ride away, and it has a completely different feel.

If Malta encourages you to slow down, Gozo has an even quieter pace.

Whenever possible, I encourage clients to spend at least one night there instead of treating it as a quick excursion.

It has a quieter rhythm, and that's exactly why it's worth experiencing.

The dramatic coastline of Gozo, Malta's quieter sister island, is known for its crystal-clear waters, rugged cliffs, and peaceful Mediterranean landscapes.

Let's Talk About the Food

One question I hear quite a bit is, "How's the food?"

My answer is always the same.

It's excellent.

Not because every restaurant is fancy.

Because meals still feel like they matter.

Fresh seafood.

Family-owned restaurants.

Local wine.

Long lunches where nobody seems to be in a hurry.

That's my kind of destination.

And if you're anything like many of my clients, it'll probably become yours too.

Traditional Maltese cuisine features fresh local ingredients, savory pastries, artisan cheeses, olives, and Mediterranean flavors that reflect the island's rich culinary heritage.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Malta?

There's really not a bad time to visit.

It just depends on what you're looking for.

If you enjoy pleasant temperatures and sightseeing, spring is wonderful.

If swimming is high on your list, summer offers long sunny days, though it also brings the largest crowds.

Personally, I love the shoulder seasons.

Early fall is especially nice because the sea is still warm, the weather is comfortable, and everything feels just a little more relaxed.

Should Malta Be the Whole Trip?

This is probably one of the questions I answer most often.

And the answer is...it depends.

If you're looking for a week where you can truly unwind, Malta absolutely stands on its own.

But many of my clients are already planning a 10- to 14-day European vacation.

That's where Malta becomes even more interesting.

Because of its location, it's surprisingly easy to combine with other destinations that complement it beautifully.

A few days in Malta followed by Sicily creates a wonderful blend of history, food, and coastal scenery.

Or perhaps Malta paired with Croatia and Montenegro if you're drawn to charming old towns and life along the Adriatic.

I've even designed itineraries that include Slovenia, adding alpine landscapes and vineyards to the journey.

The goal isn't to collect as many countries as possible.

It's to create a trip where each destination adds something different to the story.

That's always how I approach itinerary design.

So, Is Malta Worth Visiting?

Yes, absolutely.

Not because it's trying to compete with anywhere else.

Because it doesn't need to.

Malta offers something that feels increasingly rare.

It's easy to explore.

Rich in history without feeling overwhelming.

Full of wonderful food.

Beautiful coastlines.

Welcoming people.

And a pace that reminds you that travel isn't about how much you can fit into a day.

It's about enjoying the day you're in.

I think that's why so many people come home pleasantly surprised.

They weren't expecting Malta to become the highlight of their trip.

Sometimes it does.

One More Thought

If you're the kind of traveler who enjoys slowing down, learning about a place through its people, spending an extra hour over lunch because the conversation is good, or wandering a city simply because the street looks inviting, I think Malta deserves a place on your list.

Not because it's the most famous destination in the Mediterranean.

Because it might just become one of your favorites.

Thinking About Malta? Let's Talk.

Every great journey begins with choosing the right destination.

But that's only the beginning.

How you experience that destination the places you stay, the people you meet, the meals you remember, and the moments you never could have planned is what transforms a trip into something you'll still be talking about years from now.

That's how I design every itinerary at Lux Grand Travels.

If Malta has made its way onto your list, I'd love to help you create a journey that feels personal, thoughtful, and completely your own.
