Spain and Portugal are two of my favorite places in Europe to send people who love wine. Not only for the wine itself, but for everything around it.
You might spend a morning at a family-owned bodega in Rioja, sit down to a long lunch overlooking the vineyards in the Douro Valley, or visit an estate in the Alentejo, one of Portugal's most exciting regions to watch right now. The wine is wonderful, but so are the people, the food, and the slower pace that makes these places so easy to settle into.
Rather than rushing you from one tasting to the next, I plan the trip so you have time to enjoy each place. Depending on what you love, that might be winery visits, a few memorable meals, an afternoon somewhere beautiful, or time with the people who actually make the wine. If you enjoy good wine, good food, and getting to know a place through the people who live there, this one was made with you in mind.

Rioja
Rioja is Spain's best-known wine region, and for good reason. Historic wineries, rolling vineyards, wonderful restaurants, and small towns worth slowing down for. Whether you lean toward the traditional producers or the modern ones, I'll build the trip around what interests you.
The Douro is one of the most beautiful wine regions in Europe. Terraced vineyards climb above the river, family-owned quintas welcome you in, and many pair their tastings with a real meal and a view to match. A river cruise, winery visits, or a stay overlooking the vineyards, the days are as memorable as the wines.

Alentejo
Alentejo is the quieter side of Portugal. Wide-open country, welcoming estates, and excellent wine, with smaller crowds and an easy pace. It's also one of the country's most exciting regions right now, with producers blending old traditions and new ideas.

Spring
One of my favorite times to go. The vineyards are green, the weather is comfortable, and many wineries have more time for you before the busy season starts.
Summer
Long days, outdoor dining, lunches on the terrace, and evening tastings as the countryside turns.
Harvest
September and October, when the wineries are bringing in the grapes. You get to feel the energy of the season firsthand.
